How method works was formed
Closer to people and the act of building.
Hi, I’m George. Years of working as an architect on projects where design was increasingly separated from people, materials, and making led me to found Method Works.
After seeing the disconnect in the industry, I turned to community-led and self-build work. Building by hand, working closely with communities, and delivering small yet meaningful projects fundamentally changed how I approach architecture.
Method Works grew out of this experience. It is a focused practice that unites design, fabrication, and construction as a single, integrated method.
Drawing on the tradition of historic master builders, we treat the project as one continuous act—centring the process in the final product.
The Methodology
Our approach is shaped by two very different influences: the traditions of Japan and the product thinking of Silicon Valley.
Time spent in Japan had a lasting influence on how I think about architecture and the act of making. I was struck by the care given to craft, material, and proportion — and by how beauty is often found in modest, everyday buildings rather than grand structures.
Meanwhile, my time spent in Silicon Valley highlighted the power of product thinking: how well-designed concepts can be refined, produced efficiently, and made more affordable.
Method Works was founded to deliver that same level of efficiency and accessibility while ensuring lasting architectural quality. We apply product principles to architecture, refining well-considered, repeatable building types that retain craft and individuality.
This allows our spaces to achieve a custom-quality finish and sense of individuality, without the high cost of a fully custom process.
High Performance. High Craft. Lower Barriers.
Choosing how to build usually feels like a compromise. You either commit to a fully bespoke architectural process—beautiful, but often slow, unpredictable, and expensive—or you opt for standard prefabricated alternatives.
These alternatives are reduced to efficient boxes; you see them everywhere, yet they lack any architectural identity. In these structures, efficiency has become the design itself, instead of a tool to improve it.
I founded Method Works to remove that compromise.
We combine the care and individuality of a custom-designed structure with the predictability of a refined system. It’s about bringing exceptional, site-specific, and meaningful design to more people, without the traditional barriers.
Building Lightly
Through years of working with timber, I’ve developed a deep respect for its versatility and durability; detailed correctly, timber architecture can last for generations, weather gracefully, and ultimately return to the earth.
This material knowledge drives our design methodology. Our commitment is to responsible construction and a lighter footprint, driving us to design buildings for exceptional longevity while ensuring the materials used can ultimately re-enter the natural cycle.
We prioritise bio-based, natural materials chosen for their high performance and how they age. This ensures our materials wear in rather than wear out.
By building small, carefully, and with this intention, Method Works creates spaces that tread lightly on the planet while offering warmth, beauty, and lasting value accessible to more people.
